As a storyteller in Fresno, Alice seeks out the hidden gems in California’s vast San Joaquin Valley as well as three nearby national parks: Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon. She looks for the beauty, the redemption, the fighters, and the changemakers big and small.

Alice grew up in Boulder, Colorado and Knoxville, Tennessee and lived in Cambridge, England and Nairobi, Kenya as a kid. Her love of wandering started early and continues to this day in pursuit of a good story. She’s happily rappelled down caves and negotiated narrow, winding mountain roads in the Sierra Nevada to report on unique places. Some of her own favorite stories include a piece about preserving the legacy of Fresno’s Hmong B-boys, a piece tracing the origins of the dance craze, popping, and a profile of a gospel singer whose forgotten recording became part of the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning movie Moonlight.

As the former news director at KVPR in Fresno, Alice created and produced the limited and popular podcast The Other California about small towns in the San Joaquin Valley with the help of a California Humanities Documentary Grant. She also helped manage numerous collaborative projects including One Small Step and StoryCorps San Joaquin, both of which came out of a partnership with the NPR oral history project StoryCorps. As an on-call reporter for KQED, one of the largest public radio stations in the country, Alice covered the San Joaquin Valley for more than a decade.

Alice taught journalism at Fresno State for 17 years and now intermittently teaches journalism at Valley State Prison in the small town of Chowchilla. She is a former Fulbright Scholar to the University of Ghana in Accra where she taught print and broadcast journalism to graduate students and assisted them with producing a live radio news show. She also created and oversaw an oral history project about journalists who worked during Ghana’s pre-1992 transition from a military dictatorship to a democratic republic. A Fulbright Regional Travel Award allowed her to teach journalism seminars at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia in 2018. 

She has a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and is currently shopping a memoir about friendship, grief and our search for belonging called Fall Apart, Carry On.
